Eau de Parfum from Editions de Parfums Fr?d?ric Malle, launched 2007. Perfumer: Pierre Bourdon. Sold in the United States for years under the name Bois d’Orage ? per Malle’s own FAQ, the original name was French Lover and it was changed “for the US market only,” so the two names are the identical fragrance; Malle’s US site and US retailers now list it as French Lover. Masculine. Angelica sits at the centre ? green, root-like and faintly animalic ? with pimiento giving a warm chili-pepper prickle over it. Galbanum and iris keep the middle cool and slightly bitter before the base turns resinous and earthy on frankincense, vetiver and patchouli. Bourdon described the effect to Now Smell This as a plant-based animal quality that evoked the smell of a man.

• Heart Notes: the house publishes no separate heart list; it additionally names galbanum, iris, cedar and white musk in the composition without assigning them a tier
• Base Notes: patchouli, vetiver, frankincense
