Eau de Toilette from Herm?s, launched March 2006. Perfumer: Jean-Claude Ellena, Herm?s perfumer. For men ? Herm?s places it in The Men’s Universe. Herm?s describes it as a mineral, woody fragrance whose main raw materials are grapefruit, cedar and flint, telling “the story of man’s relationship with the earth, his humble and harmonious dialogue with nature and the elements.” Ellena drew on the writings of French author Jean Giono, and set out to create a vertical fragrance built primarily from vegetal and mineral notes. He deliberately left musk out: “Musk creates a mask on the skin,” he explained ? without it, “each time, the fragrance is unique.” Herm?s does not publish a top/heart/base pyramid. At launch the composition was described as an orange formulated for Herm?s by Albert Vieille, plus grapefruit, blended with flint for a mineral effect and combined with pepper, bay rose, geranium, patchouli, benzoin and vetiver around a central note of Atlas cedar. On skin it opens sparkling and mildly sweet with citrus, then delivers pepper, cedar and patchouli together, softening over the following hour toward a smoky, gunpowder-like impression. Terre d’Herm?s has grown into a line: Terre d’Herm?s Parfum (2009, Jean-Claude Ellena ? grapefruit, cedar, shiso; $179 / 2.54 fl.oz), Eau Tr?s Fra?che (2014, Jean-Claude Ellena), Eau Intense V?tiver Eau de Parfum (2018 ? vetiver with green bergamot and Sichuan pepper), Eau Givr?e Eau de Parfum (2022, Christine Nagel ? citron, juniper berry, Timut pepper), and Eau de Parfum Intense (March 2025, Christine Nagel ? coffee and liquorice with bergamot, black pepper, burning wood and lava stone).
